Collagen Induction Therapy, otherwise known as microneedling, is a safe, minimally-invasive way to smooth out skin and help reverse the signs of aging. Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) uses a pen-like device with tiny needles to cause micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process, which results in cell turnover and increased collagen and elastin production. This leads to softening of fine lines to moderate wrinkles, skin firming, and improvement in texture and pore size. Microneedling is great for scarring as well, whether it be acne scarring on the face or stretch marks on the body. Because this treatment does not rely on a heat based device to cause the injury, it is great for all skin types. The downtime from micro-needling is minimal and the results are natural, thus a great procedure for many skin types and conditions.
In addition to microneedling alone we can add the application of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) directly onto the micro-injures created by the microneedling, referred to as a Vampire Facial®. PRP contains highly concentrated proteins called growth factors, which promote the regeneration of tissue, collagen growth, and the acceleration of wound healing. This treatment is natural in that your own cells are used, so it is not foreign to the body. Since a distillate of growth factors from your own blood (PRP) is used, there should be no side effects from the solution being needled into the skin. The body reacts to the treated cells as it does to a wound and immediately starts repairing the tissue. This builds the underlying tissue with tightening, smoothing, and increased blood flow (which makes the color and tone more attractive). The Vampire Facial® is a great treatment option if you want to enhance your microneedling treatment and help turn back the hands of time to look like a more vibrant, radiant you!
Anyone over the age of 18 years old can benefit from microneedling or the Vampire Facial®. Those who would like to reduce their pore size, smooth out their skin, minimize scarring, or rejuvenate the skin are great candidates. These treatments are great for targeting wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and cheeks and for plumping the skin giving a more youthful, smooth appearance.
At the time of your consultation you will be given detailed pre-treatment and post -treatment guidelines to follow for your treatments.
The day of your treatment a topical numbing agent will be applied prior to treatment. If you are having the Vampire Facial® Dr. Lieman will draw your blood to extract the Platelet Rich Plasma while you are numbing. After the numbing cream is cleansed off, tiny needles between .25 mm and 2.0mm in depth, with the SkinPen Precision, are inserted into the skin and glide over the areas with the aid of either the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or a Hyaluronic Acid serum. The resulting micro-injuries stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, thickening the skin to improve texture and restore a youthful glow. This treatment takes about 30-45 minutes to complete.
After your microneedling treatment you will have erythema (redness) to the skin and mild swelling. Depending on the depth of treatment some may appear more mildly pink, while others may be moderately red. The redness can last a few days, but lessens every day. Additionally, if you have the Vampire Facial® you will feel tight due to the PRP drying on the skin, and may appear “crusty” until you wash your skin. The day after your treatment you can apply makeup to cover it (mineral make up is preferred). You may also have a mild to moderate amount of dryness and/or flaking for a few days after your treatment. Do not pick or rub at it, just hydrate as needed.
Your skincare specialist will develop a treatment plan that best fits your needs based on your targeted concerns. However, it is generally recommended to have at least three treatments for texture, pore size, and anti-aging, while scarring or more severe aging concerns may take up to six treatments. The treatments are best done in 4 week intervals.

Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, is a natural blood product with medical and cosmetic uses. Its growing popularity is due to the short time the procedure takes, the lack of side effects, and the visible results. A small amount of a patient’s blood is drawn, and spun in the FDA-approved Eclipse PRP centrifuge system, to separate the red and white blood cells from the platelets and plasma. The latter two components are combined to create plasma with a 5 to 10 times greater concentration of platelets, growth factors, and active proteins, which provide a variety of benefits when injected or micro-needled back into the body.
The growth factors and proteins within the PRP stimulate a stem cells response that promotes the regeneration of tissue, collagen growth, new blood vessel formation and the acceleration of wound healing. Growth factors play an important part in helping to regulate cellular growth and maintain a healthy skin structure and function, promote the formation of collagen and elastin fibers and stimulate biochemical pathways that promote tissue repair and regeneration. Therefore, having the ability to reuse your own growth factors within the PRP can help to rewind the appearance of aging and wrinkles. Benefits of PRP include:
This revolutionary concept can also be used to treat male and female sexual dysfunction, to reinvigorate sexual desire, aid in vulvar rejuvenation and improve skin tone and contour in the breasts. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Lieman today!
